The Guidance/Assessment Module, "GUY", shares information that it
collects with the adaptive tutor, thus guiding the tutoring process.
Its second function is to provide information about the student's
learning progress and status to a supervising teacher.
GUY is the newest of the three tools developed in Phase I, and is in an
early stage of development. Its functionality, simplicity, and ease of
use will all be improved in future development.
The Neural Network called "Select
Net" performs knowledge status modeling for the Guidance/Assessment Module.
Here are the segments of the Guidance/Assessment Report that
is produced by GUY after a tutor/student session (each is followed
by an example from an actual "MAN" simulation):
Session Summary - A few summary statistics describing the session
selected for reporting.
FactBase Status Summary - Statistics that
summarize the student's learning progress and knowledge status for each FactBase
that has been used to date.
FactBase Knowledge Map - Presents the inferred status of the student's
knowledge for each FactBase in use. Each entry in the map represents
one fact. The letter shown is a code representing the current
inferred status of that fact in the student's knowledge: dash means
not yet presented; "L" indicates the fact is being learned;
"N" means newly learned; and "A" through "H" indicate known for
time periods of 1, 3, 6, ... days.
Learning History - Plots the history of the student's knowledge over the
most recent 21 games. The game number increases downward, and the
plotted quantities increase to the right. The symbols "SKXL" represent
plots of Scores, Knowledge, Cross-back ("X", forgetting known facts),
and Learning. Improved graphics and simplification of the plot are
planned for Phase II.
