The award citation, presented in November, 1987, reads:
WILLIAM CHARLES MEAD was elected a FELLOW of The American Physical Society for pioneering research and leadership in Inertial Confinement Fusion, including design of intermediate density targets, design and analysis of laser-plasma coupling experiments, and simulations of fluid instabilities and ablation.
